Wyndham Championship prepares for marathon final day

Ever since Thursday’s first round was wiped out at the Wyndham Championship due to weather, the tournament organisers have been desperately trying to play catch up.

Despite many believing that the tournament would be reduced to three rounds, it was confirmed yesterday evening that both the third and fourth rounds of the 2024 Wyndham will take place today, ensuring that every player who makes the cut will have 36 holes to play.

Although a marathon of golf greets half the Wyndham field today, the decision seems a fair way to decide which players will make the final 70 in the FedEx Playoffs and take their spots in next week’s St Jude Classic.

With plenty of drama yesterday and so much to look forward to today, here are the tournaments talking points ahead of what is bound to be a special day.

As the race to make the top 70 in the playoffs heats up, Matt Kuchar comes to the fore

Starting the week ranked 113 in the world, American veteran Matt Kuchar knew that only a win this week would seal his place in the FedEx Playoffs.

Now firmly heading towards the end of his playing career, Kuchar hasn’t been as active as most on Tour this season but when he has teed it up this year, his season has mostly consisted of missed cuts.

Never one to panic, Kuchar must have been working hard behind the scenes and was able to finish third in his last start at the 3M Open.

Having rediscovered his form, Kuchar has taken that form into this week and was simply magnificent yesterday. Having carded an opening round 64, he was able to match that effort yesterday and currently sits at the top of the leaderboard on -12.

With his putter in fine working order, he has just dropped one shot all week and has shown he has the scoring power to really compete here.

Set to give it his all in order to make the top 70, whether Kuchar has the stamina needed to perform at the highest level for 36 holes today remains to be seen.

Max Greyserman fires himself into contention with a stunning round of 60

The Sedgefield Country Club is still feeling the effects of Storm Debby and with the fairways and greens still soft from all the recent rainfall, it is a scorer’s paradise.

One man to take advantage of the generous conditions was Max Greyserman. Like Kuchar, Greyserman was in fine form at the 3M Open and after finishing as the runner up, he looks determined to go one place better here.

Ranked 76 in the world, Greyserman has made enough cuts this season to find himself nestled just inside the top 70 in the current FedEx rankings and a good showing here should secure his place in next week’s St Jude Classic.

One of the form men on Tour currently, Greyserman was in complete control of his swing yesterday, going onto shoot the lowest round of his professional career with a superb round of 60.

Vaulting up the leaderboard, he will start his third round one stroke behind Kuchar and will have high hopes of landing his first ever PGA title.

Chad Ramey makes late surge to make St Jude field

Sitting on -11 alongside Greyserman is Chad Ramey. Ramey is currently one of the biggest movers of the week in the FedEx rankings and the current second position he finds himself in has seen him vault from position 106 to 81.

However, despite his high position on the leaderboard, it still isn’t enough and Ramey will have to win if he is to have any hopes of lining up at the St Jude Classic.

Like Kuchar, Ramey has just dropped one shot through his first two rounds and was able to keep his card clean yesterday. Having burnt up the front nine yesterday, he would have been hugely disappointed to only have posted one birdie on his final nine holes yesterday.

With the stacked nature of the leaderboard and anybody capable of making a move, Ramey has plenty of work to do if he is to win his first PGA title since the Puntacana Championship in 2022.

Could this finally be the time for Cameron Young?

Ever since emerging as a force on the PGA Tour, everyone has been wondering when Cameron Young will win his first PGA title.

The Tour’s Rookie of the Year back in 2022, Young has finished as a runner up at the Open and has filled the second spot on the PGA Tour six times.

Although not the biggest in terms of height, Young is a pure ball striker. Able to hit the ball a mile and containing a deft, soft touch on the greens, Young was in his element yesterday as he surged up the leaderboard with a powerful round of 62.

Having already posted a 59 this year at the Travelers Championship, Young is a birdie machine and should find the course at his mercy today. Fit enough for the 36 hole slog that awaits today, whether Young can handle the occasion could be the biggest hurdle that he needs to overcome.

Once Young is able to win his first title, you feel that he will explode and become one of the major forces in the game. Many will be hoping that his liftoff could come today.

Soft conditions should lead to plenty of value in the betting

With the soft conditions set to continue, anybody who makes the cut has a chance of victory today.

Billy Horschel has brought his good form from the Open into this week and is just two off the top spot, opening round leader Beau Hossler is another who is two off the top spot. It could also be worth keeping an eye on Aaron Rai. The Englishman has been in superb form this year and has a string of top ten finishes to his name. Yet to turn any of those strong starts into wins, he could represent some of the very best value of the day.

If you fancy placing a bet ahead of the action teeing off today, here is how the top ten in the betting currently looks.

MATT KUCHAR - 4/1

CAMERON YOUNG - 4/1
